CITY OF SOLEDAD UNANIMOUSLY DESIGNATED A SANCTUARY CITY BY CITY COUNCIL

On March 21, 2017, the Soledad City Council, on a unanimous 5-0 vote, passed a resolution designating Soledad a Sanctuary City.

In passing the resolution, according to the City Council’s resolution, the City was seeking to “memorialize and clearly articulate” its commitment to Soledad’s immigrant community, and seeking to create an environment where immigrant families do not have to be in fear that the City is working in conjunction with federal immigration authorities.

“Our region has always thrived because of the contributions made by our immigrant community,” said Fred Ledesma, Mayor, City of Soledad. “By passing this resolution, we are making it clear that our resources will never be used to assist federal immigrant efforts.”

By becoming one of the first cities in Monterey County to authorize Sanctuary City designation, the City of Soledad is looking to other cities to take a similar step to support the region’s immigrant community, and equally important, to support the agriculture economy of Monterey County.
