Operations and Maintenance
The Public Works Department operates and maintains the City's public infrastructure systems. These systems include:
- The City's streets, sidewalks and pathways;
- The City's parks and recreation facilities;
- The City's storm drainage collection and discharge system.
The Public Works Department manages the condition of city streets through a Pavement Management System that rates and tracks street surface condition and assists with determining the most efficient and cost-effective use of street maintenance funding. Street surface condition is protected through the issuance of Encroachment Permits to people that construct improvements against or within the public Rights-of-Way within the City.
In addition to these public infrastructure systems, the Public Works Department is responsible for the care and maintenance of all City owned vehicles including police cars and fire trucks.
The Public Works Department also implements and manages the City's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Phase II storm water permit . This permit is issued by the State of California through the State Water Resources Control Board and outlines the Best Management Practices that the City has agreed to implement in order to do it's part in reducing pollution entering our streams and rivers carried there in storm water run-off.
