The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining the city’s infrastructure, including streets and sidewalks, public parks, right-of-way landscaping, community facilities, traffic signals, streetlights, the storm drain system, and the city’s fleet of emergency and non-emergency vehicles and equipment. Other services include providing utility services (water and sewer), administration of garbage services, graffiti abatement, and emergency response support to the Fire and Police departments.

The Administration Division of the Public Works Department oversees the management effort and coordination of the Capital Improvement Program, Assessment District Maintenance, Transit Operations, Grant Administration, and the following Divisions of Public Works:

  1. Water Quality Control
  2. Engineering Services
  3. Parks/Streets Maintenance

The operations, maintenance, and administration of these programs are funded by multiple sources, including a part of the General Fund, most portions of the Special Revenue Funds, all Enterprise Funds, half of Internal Services Fund, capital portions of the Redevelopment Fund, most of the Fiduciary Fund, and most of the Capital Improvement Fund.
